Recently I have been studying other animal therapies in comparison to hippo therapy. Most of the studies were equine versus canine. I found that the multiple horse studies were more effective in reducing children's stress, irritability, and hyperactivity, These studies were done on children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Some went over a duration of 10 weeks, some 12 weeks, and one was 3 months twice a week. What impressed me the most was how some children or teens who were non verbal or spoke minimally, ended up speaking more and spoke a wider variety of words. Some of the kids actually spent time being educated on horses which is something I was thinking of incorporating into my own program. Now that I have seen the effects of the education aspect I definitely will incorporate this because I know how much good it can do and when I get the whole group together I can have that be the Education Day. I would probably have a different theme every Ed Day and teach for about an hour about a topic and have the kids do activities throughout. This research is helping because I am seeing what the effects are of doing what I'm doing so I can really see how beneficial it is.
